MCCARTHY, Penny (2014). Time will darken paper. ESOPUS, 21, 121-136. [Article]
The project is a commission to produce 20 pages of new work for the Esopus Foundation to be presented in the Spring 2014 issue of Esopus magazine.
Time will darken paper takes the form of a picture essay to examine the act of mimesis as a way to transform our understanding of key texts. This series of graphite images resituates text pages as pictures or as components of an aesthetic puzzle. The project draws on a range of source material including political memos, fictional texts and historical images to consider the way narratives are constructed as events depicting people in time and place like shapes on a canvas.
The Esopus Foundation Ltd. is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization incorporated in New York State in 2003. It was formed to provide an unmediated forum through which artists, writers, musicians, and other creative people can make a direct connection with the general public. Over the past decade, the Foundation has been largely devoted to the publishing of Esopus, a twice-yearly magazine that features content from all creative disciplines presented in an unmediated format. ESOPUS s features contributions from a cross-section of creative disciplines presented in a striking visual format with minimal editorial framing and no advertising. Each issue of Esopus includes three long-form contemporary artists’ projects—past contributors have included Richard Tuttle, Jenny Holzer, Robert Therrien and film-maker David Lynch.
