Abstract
Studies of long barrows have shown that choice of location could have been based on the intended view over the landscape and may, therefore, have served as territorial markers. The question addressed in this paper relates to whether or not the quantification of changes in FCVA visibility indices can be correlated to possible choices of site location and, therefore, to hypotheses about territoriality. The FCVA indices indicate regions of high and low visibility, and the proposed method of differences can disambiguate these regions by pinpointing which scales (distances) have the most significant changes and thus, point to the optimal scale at which barrows and landscape features were visible.
