JOSEPH-LESTER, Jaspar, BEECH, Amanda and POOLE, Matthew (2007). Curating video: One Way Street. [Show/Exhibition] [Show/Exhibition]
One Way Street is the first of a series of international exhibitions of video works developed in a collaborative research project, Curating Video.
The project examines and theorises new forms and approaches to the duration of video, understanding such media as architectural, object based within the specific gallery environment. The phenomenological quality of video is highlighted in our research through innovative installation situations that are underpinned by readings of cinematic space as architectural field leading to the notion that social life may be figured as cinematic territory.
This research is comprised of a series of international exhibitions of video works (One Way Street, Sheppard Gallery, Reno, Nevada, USA, March 2007 and KX Gallery, Hamburg, November 2007) and public symposia (University of Nevada, March 2007 and UAL, London, 2008).
By inhabiting different rhetorical devices, the video works in the exhibition take on monumental and cinematic qualities, demonstrating the ability of video to move us to agreement, to immerse us and to produce what we understand to be our commonality.
