Abstract
This chapter introduces key principles, concepts and ideas in the theoretical framework of Ecological Dynamics, related to the performance context of association football (soccer). There is a special emphasis on the dynamic transactions that emerge between players, coaches and support staff with the performance contexts of this team sport. This chapter provides insights into the theoretical background for readers to make connections with subsequent chapters, highlighting their relevance for analysing performance and for designing practice activities and programmes to develop athletes throughout their career and prepare them for competition. This book focuses on how skills are learned, as expertise and knowledge of the competitive environment in football are refined through practice and experience.
