Abstract
Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) has rapidly advanced and is becoming increasingly embedded in higher education, enhancing students’ learning experiences, access to educational resources, and peer collaboration. Its integration presents significant opportunities for personalised AI-driven learning and a transformative shift in academic practices. This study explores the role of AI-personalised learning in higher education and impact on students’ academic performance. Additionally, this research examines the challenges of AI-driven personalised learning on students’ academic performance such as critical thinking, intellectual property concerns, plagiarism, academic integrity, inclusivity, and unequal access to GAI tools based on socio-economic disparities. Using a qualitative methodology, this research focuses on the experiences of university students in the United Kingdom. The findings offer valuable implications and recommendations to support both students and faculty in effectively navigating generative AI technologies in academic settings.
