Abstract
Chapter 16: Unconditional Surrender? opens with Norah’s ongoing frustrations with Danny’s letters and explores her eventual decision to put her own feelings to one side and, in the context of the horrors of his wartime role, give him the kind of support and devotion that befitted her role as his future wife. Norah begins collecting for her bottom drawer and preparing for a weekend away with Danny, not quite the ‘done thing’ for a respectable young woman in 1943. The chapter ends with a second plot twist: the arrival of a mysterious letter from Jim, which drops dark hints that Danny may not be who he says he is. It is now, in October 1943, after three weekends spent at Norah’s family home, that Danny suddenly disappears.
