Abstract

Background:

There is substantial evidence of the benefits of physical activity (PA) during pregnancy and the postpartum period. However, PA levels remain low, especially in deprived areas and among ethnic minorities.

Aim:

This study set out to explore the PA experiences and perspectives of women from high ethnic diversity and socioeconomically deprived backgrounds.

Method:

A semi-structured interview schedule, based on using the COM-B (capability, opportunity, motivation and behaviour) model, focused on PA experiences among pregnant women and those who had recently given birth.

Findings:

Participants were frustrated by limited local opportunities and minimal information on being active during and after pregnancy. Barriers included physical symptoms, lack of information, limited resources, and cultural myths. Facilitators included clear advice, consistent healthcare guidance, community support, accessible resources, and positive health beliefs.

Conclusion:

The findings highlight the need for culturally sensitive, accessible interventions and greater support from healthcare and community resources.
