Abstract

This book chapter offers an in-depth analysis of the first South Korean blockbuster film SHIRI (dir. Kang Je-kyu, 1999) and the surrounding debates - the SHIRI syndrome, which is a highly evocative term that suggest the film's engagement with the important social and political issues and the significance and power of audio-visual blockbuster culture in contemporary South Korea.
