Abstract
Researchers are considered “duty bearers” who uphold fundamental ethical principles for maintaining ethical integrity in research culture, systems, processes, and knowledge generation, dissemination, and its impact. Therefore, it is their responsibility to adhere to the fundamental principles of Equality, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EEDI) in research to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their background, characteristics, or circumstances, are involved in research and innovation. This seminar aims to provide an overview of EEDI essentials and how to incorporate them into all aspects of research. Researchers play a critical role in maintaining ethical standards in research culture, systems, processes, and knowledge generation, dissemination, and its impact. As "duty bearers," researchers must ensure that every individual, regardless of their background, characteristics, or circumstances, is included in research and innovation. The principles of Equality, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EEDI) are essential for creating a research culture that is equitable, diverse, and inclusive. Equality means that all individuals are treated fairly and have access to the same opportunities. Equity goes beyond equality and strives to provide individuals with the necessary resources and support to achieve equal outcomes. Diversity emphasises the importance of recognising and valuing differences among individuals and promoting a culture that embraces diversity in all forms. Inclusion ensures that all individuals feel welcomed and valued and that their perspectives and contributions are heard and respected. Incorporating EEDI principles into every aspect of research involves a multifaceted approach. Researchers must first evaluate their own biases and assumptions and actively work to mitigate them. They must also ensure that research questions and methodologies are inclusive and that the participants in the research reflect the diversity of the population being studied. Researchers must also consider the impact of their research on different communities and work to disseminate their findings in a way that is accessible and relevant to everyone. This seminar provides an opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the essential principles of EEDI and how to incorporate them into all aspects of research. By embracing EEDI principles, researchers can create a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive research community that fosters innovation and benefits all individuals.
