Abstract
Undisclosed is an exhibition seeking to expose Modern Slavery, a 21st Century Crime. The exhibition will take place from 2nd March to 18th April 2022 at The Hostry, Norwich Cathedral. The exhibition will be curated by Caroline Evans and Nicola Hockley. Seven well established contemporary artists (including one collaborative partnership) are commissioned to produce new work that challenges and engages audiences in order to raise awareness and inspire deeper thinking.
Somewhere/Nowhere
Making the decision to avoid misrepresenting survivors of Modern Slavery, Quinn and Stewart instead focused their work on places where incidences of modern slavery had been recorded. Their research surprisingly led them back to sites and landscapes in Norfolk with which they both have a strong personal connection. In filming these seemingly innocuous locations, it became evident that the way in which rural landscapes are constructed and inhabited enables all manner of atrocities to take place out of sight.
Their work presents these locations as a fleeting encounter with anonymous spaces in a manner reminiscent of a lived experience/phenomenological encounter with landscape. A reconciliation or reckoning occurs herein – through the fragmented work presents a site within which to critically approach these places, contradicting themes of nostalgia, inhabitation, access, and criminal abuse or manipulation.
