Abstract
Sports engineering has emerged in the last two decades as a legitimate area of research. However, some are still not sure what sports engineering is all about and, if it does work, isnt it just cheating? Steve Haake has looked at the economics of sport to see why its so popular and discusses its attracion to students. Some examples from tennis, football and wheelchair racing are described to show how mainstream engineering principles can be used to analyse and redesign sports equipment
