Abstract

This paper discusses the application of Knowledge Base Systems to distillation column groups for both normal operation and start up. The project aim was for a real-time KBS with a graphical front end providing on-line advice to the operators. The software Promass supports the process operational staff by offering operational advice in advance of executive shut down actions. The specific requirements of the Human Computer Interface up in the different phases are discussed and a novel methodology is modulating control (normal operation) but is unsuitable for sequential nature of the start-up process. The commercial benefits of the KBS System in the two applications are compared.
