This chapter highlights ongoing research towards improving current 6 public perceptions of UK policing OSINT. The work aims to evaluate contempo- 7 rary public misconceptions, exaggerations and under-acknowledgements of modern 8 investigations and surveillance. In this sense the chapter is primarily qualitative 9 building on existing literature that has focused specifically on the practicalities and 10 various technical facets of modern OSINT usage. The chapter’s positions contribute 11 to the increasingly complex and diversified field of modern OSINT by highlighting 12 public concerns and counter-narratives to the reactive and proactive benefits, in 13 particular through concerns of disproportionality, transparency, misuse and 1145 accountability.
