This presentation involved a screening of a photographic sequence made in the former Spode ceramics factory in Stoke on Trent, which considered the surfaces of this location - its walls, floors, artefacts, encroaching weeds… Using this work as an exemplar, I was able to comment on the creative and critical possibilities of Perecquian methods of exploration, in particular an attention to the infra-ordinaire. This determinedly and purposefully superficial inquiry to the surface of things is considered as a means of coming to know and interrogate place and everyday things. Keywords: infra-ordinary; Georges Perec; photography; artistic research; place; the everyday
