Abstract

INDEX: Award Exhibition is a unique world touring exhibition displaying the winners and finalists of INDEX: Award and has been seen by more than 14 million people around the world. The exhibition is always displayed in public spaces with free access for all. It offers a profound insight into how design can improve important areas of people’s lives, while allowing designers and manufacturers to gain knowledge about how to create designs that are not only beautiful, but also sustainable in every aspect of production. Dr David Swann's ABC Syringe, an INDEX: Design to Improve Life finalist was showcased in a travelling exhibition that visited Copenhagen, Singapore, Luxembourg, Helsinki, Bauhaus, Risor, Huddersfield, Tallin and Hong Kong.

Established in 2002 under the patronage of the Crown Prince of Denmark, INDEX: Design to Improve Life is a Denmark-based non-profit organisation that promotes designs aiming at the improvement of the lives of people worldwide, both in developed and developing countries, by means of a design award (INDEX: Award), a world-touring exhibition, a summer camp, conferences, and publications. The biggest design award in the world with prizes amounting to €500,000, the importance of INDEX: Award lies in the unique, over-arching theme of Design to Improve Life – a concept which has established INDEX: Award as a global, inspirational design beacon. It is split into five categories: Body, Home, Work, Play and Community, representing the entire human life, inside and out.
