Abstract
Unfamiliar Light explores a series of art works, including projections and sculptures, which bring together water and light, showing the ideas, research, and work in and out of the studio that both underlie and produce them as sited works.
Water and light form a magical combination; both elements are delightful, captivating and awe-inspiringly powerful by turn. The task of bringing these characteristics together to make a coherent whole is as daunting as it is exciting, as it is to make a work addressing and combining these affects, producing an emotive and evocative experience for the viewer.
The lecture covers a series of works by a range of artists including Illuminated carpet, Durham, Where R U in the sea’s surf, Venice, and finally considers in detail Maelstrom, a new work to be developed throughout the early months of 2014, exploring the process of thought that precedes the making of a work.
