Abstract
‘An Idea of North’ questions the construction, through film, photography, story and personal history, of an idea of north as both a physical and psychological landscape.
Extending previous investigations of both the journey and the bookwork as a framework for the creation and structuring of a body of work, ‘An Idea of North’ brings together images from photographic projects undertaken over a 30 year period in Northern England, Scotland and Ireland, alongside related ephemera and reworked appropriated imagery. Here the journey is as much through time and personal history as through landscape and space.
Both artwork and the related academic paper identify and unpick key motifs and themes drawing on visual and narrative approaches from a range of depictions of the north to examine their influence and visual legacy.
The work was produced as a limited edition 54 page B4 book digitally printed on Evolution Uncoated 100gms and KeayKolour 300gms.
An Idea of North was exhibited at 'Northern Light' an exhibition of contemporary landscape photography held at SIA Gallery, Sheffield Hallam University from 4th - 31st July 2016 and features on the related website.
The related paper was present at at the conference: Northern Light: Landscape Photography and Evocations of the North held at Sheffield Hallam University July 4-5, 2016.
