Abstract
The legal framework outlined here addresses data protection and human rights issues that may or will arise when personal information from various sources is collected and processed for use by those managing a crisis. This situation is the one envisaged by the ATHENA project, but is also increasingly relevant in many other situations due to the rapidly increasing use of mobile technology and the overwhelming amount of personal information now available on publicly accessible web-based platforms; in particular, social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook.
