Abstract

The ProFit project is a cooperation between local public authorities and knowledge institutions within four cities in Europe. Since April 2011 the Profit project has been developing the Fieldlab concept as a facility to stimulate innovation and new business creation in the active outdoor lifestyles sector. The Fieldlabs are located in urban communities where citizens can engage in innovative sports, exercise, and play activities. Aims: To outline experiences to date on the Profit project that will monitor citizen’s physical activity, health and social connectiveness so as to establish the effects and impact of product and service innovation within a Fieldlab setting. Findings: An outline of the characteristics of each of the Fieldlabs; examples of innovative products tested, and finally; the research protocol adopted across Europe to assess the characteristics of those who live in close proximity to the Fieldlab will be discussed. Conclusion: Our overall intention is to share the experiences of introducing Fieldlabs amongst the wider European community.
