Abstract: | These badges tell the stories of uncherished gifts, which despite their negative associations for the owner, are still kept. Uncherished gifts offer rich potential for research, because they usually embody a conflict in meaning. As much as a recipient might want to rid themselves of an uncherished gift, they may also feel compelled to keep it. The badges are hand-made from embossed cartridge paper, wax, and a dress-making pin, and were given to participants in the Campaign for Objects in Purgatory project. They have little material value, but they embody an investment of labour, creating a dilemma for the recipient; should they keep it, and care for it?
