Hylo: explorations of Sci-Art

In collaboration with lens-based artist, Andy Eccleston, Wright has created sonic interpretations of inaccessible environments, bridging physical and psychological territory.

This was a centrepiece of Sightsonic Digital Arts Festival, York. Subsequent iterations (continuing) respond to their environment, e.g. using shop windows as acoustic devices in a city centre. Each piece is therefore a “work in progress”, exploring the micro and macro aspects of spatialisation within each differing exhibition space. It used medical imaging techniques and image-to-sound conversion software to create soundscapes in a psycho-acoustic examination of scale and imagined landscape.

The three works are: REQUIEM "…a man who dissolved everything in his art", (Isaiah Berlin on Verdi) The dissolution, then regeneration, of a French horn immersed in nitric acid. (Commissioned by The Culture Club and Opera North for centenary of Verdi’s death)

ACOUSMA Binaural "opera" based on the phenomenon of auditory hallucinations constructed from MRI brain scans, the images converted to sonograms and used to manipulate the recorded voice of opera north’s Vikki Sharpe.

SPINDRIFT An endoscopic journey through the internal mechanisms of brass instruments initially exhibited as a series of large format mounted images, accompanied by a 15.8 multi-channel surround sound installation.
