Abstract
The article examines how the World Cup generates political legitimacy through football's emotional appeal. Drawing on ideas of enjoyment and fetishistic disavowal, I ask how supporters might remain attentive to the tournament's political and commercial conditions while still recognising the genuine attachments that make the World Cup meaningful.
