Abstract
This chapter presents four case studies addressing the development of doctoral students with an emphasis on career readiness, mental health, socio-emotional skills and life after study. Marson and Ferris discuss the supervisory role in developing academic identity. Casey, Trenoweth, Taylor and Knight evaluate wellbeing interventions including mentoring and mindfulness, thereby highlighting the importance of tailored support for mental health. Devis-Rozental and Polkinghorne focus on socio-emotional intelligence (SEI), showing how supervisors can nurture self-awareness, resilience, and social responsibility. Rivas reflects on inclusive mentoring practices that integrate professional development and industry engagement, particularly for supporting students from marginalised backgrounds. Collectively, these case studies emphasise the need for inclusive and career-oriented supervision to ensure doctoral students are equipped for success both within and beyond academia.
