Abstract
This essay takes a biographical approach to tell the remarkable story of the Togolese German Garber family based in Berlin from the 1890s into the 1950s. It demonstrates the ways in which colonialism and its afterlives impacted on the family and the role Berlin played as a spatial starting point of migration for many Black Germans.
