ATHERTON, Michelle (2025). Soil Séance Sessions Album. [Artefact] [Artefact]
Abstract
Soil Séance Sessions V Vinyl Release Sept 2025
A limited edition of Soil Séance Sessions V vinyl album has been released and is available from
Museum für Sepulkralkultur, Kassel, Germany. The album reproduces the tracks included in my installation Low Hanging & the Soil Séance Sessions at the museum Mar-Sept 2025.
The album documents frequencies from above and below ground, simultaneously transmitted via contact microphones attached to the earth through kitchen skewers.
At times the Soil Séance Sessions V offers watery atmospherics mixing with ubiquitous everyday noises; a passing trolley, random background conversation or a crow cawing but then the sound shifts to more rasping, dripping, slurping, trilling, drilling and knocking. These soundtracks are not dramatic or sublime, presenting a more extended play of intermittent low-lying scores, unfolding in their own time. The sudden tempo of a rhythm may fail, abruptly disappearing or gradually dissipating, that may or may not re-sound. These soundtracks form and fade like erratic improvisations.
