Abstract
Chapter 22: Men’s Regrets, explores Jim’s letter of apology (discussed in Chapter 20). This letter appears to me to be pivotal to understanding Norah’s and Danny’s affair, yet in the absence of any further information about its production, I have to imagine a scene: Danny and Jim meeting in an Eastbourne pub, Danny wanting his brother to send Norah a letter to make right their treatment of her. This short chapter focuses on the silences surrounding aspects of men’s wartime behaviour and the later regrets of some.
