Abstract
In the summer of 2022, I was asked to produce photographic copies and digital scans of a rare and valuable photograph that my colleague Dr David Clarke had just secured for the Sheffield Hallam University Special Collections Archive. This image, which was thought to have been lost, is at the heart of a 30 year old UFO mystery which Dr Clarke has been researching and writing about for a number of years. After producing copies for research and publicity purposes I went on to produce a detailed photographic analysis of both the image itself and the print which became central to the international debate that arose around the image after it was published in a double page ‘scoop’ in the Daily Mail on the 12/08/22. The image, its story and my analysis went viral on social media with conspiracy theorists for both side of the debate using both the image and my analysis of it, along with the research undertaken by Dr Clarke and others to construct a host of conflicting theories concerning both the images production and event it appears to depict. My analysis was quoted both in the physical and online media and reference in numerous social media posts.
