Abstract

This article is a contribution to the debates on data and platform governance. The invisibility of data processes behind automation principles (algorithms, machine learning) hinder their governance. The first part of the text explores the concept of platform and platformization as enclosures, and discusses some of the problems surrounding the legitimacy and governance of platforms and their lack of fit with current legal frameworks. The second part is dedicated to the paths of the data within the platforms. The text applies a model based on Verón's theories of meaning to explore the (in)visibility of data. Moments and levels are pointed out in which there are gaps in meaning between the social discourse and the physical process of the production, management, and transmission of digital data. Applying this model can be de-automated interpretation processes that seemed hidden, opening spaces for discussions on ethics and data governance on platforms.
