Abstract
The threshold – the entrance to sanctuary: “Lux Mundi” (Light of the World) & “Non horruisti virginis uterus” (Thou didst not abhor the virgins womb) 2020. St Mary Church, Grand St, New York City. Collaboration with Fr. Andrew O’Connor. Triptych bronze door cladding & bronze & glass door porthole. The dialogue between the handmade, the human, and laser cut grilles is the essential dialogue about religious tension. The incarnation is both God and man. The doors embody the theology of “virgina’dei pare” which is written over the 1833, and now interior portal, of the doors of St. Mary. Translated as “virgina and God bearer’ this is the true theological title of Mary the Mother of God. Two main themes are united in the design of the doors, that of the bee hive and that of the cross. The bee is an early symbol of the Christian Church, a gatherer of light. Weight, both visual and physical is used to convey authority and permanence; the doors closed convey fortress. But open they become mother.
