Abstract

This chapter discusses the role of community coaches and the range of contexts in which they are expected to operate. The chapter extends current participant development models to include individuals who are currently not active at all. Finally, the chapter argues that in order to be effective in a range of settings and with a range of participants, and non-participants, it is essential that the community coach becomes a 'social performer' who understands the identity of those being coached and who needs to adopt different, and appropriate, roles in differing community coaching situations.
