Abstract
A specially curated exhibition of contemporary metalwork for Tresor 2017 in Basel, Switzerland.
"Contemporary metal-smiths are looking beyond silver and gold to forge exciting new work that brings an energy and freshness to objects in base metals. All the traditional skills and techniques are still present but these smiths wear this heritage lightly and present clean, simple, emotional work that invites us in through form, colour and texture. There is a more industrial feel to much of this work with forging and welding joining the more usual chasing and raising to create vibrant contemporary pieces. Research into alloys and patination are introducing a new range of textures and colours into the lexicon of smithing. The marks of the making are often left visible on the finished piece, describing the dialogue that took place between maker and metal. A more sculptural approach is evident, with form being more important than function. This is work for living with not looking after, handling not locking away."
