Abstract
'Nine Walks' is a body of work resulting from my engagement with the Media Arts Research Walking Group at Sheffield Hallam University who are exploring the role of walking in as a social, developmental and production space for the creative arts. / My participation in the walking group is an extension of my investigation of the journey as a creative, conceptual and contemplative space for photography which in turn reflects an interest in the role of the accident, instinct and intuition and the ‘found subject’ in the creation of photographic work in a personal response to place and space. / The walks provided both a formal structure and a creative time and space within which instinct and intuition could freely operate. Themes, subjects and relationships suggested themselves during the walks or while editing and sequencing images. / The results are part mapping, part an exploration of location and part an expression of an interior narrative. / This work contributes to an ongoing inquiry into the journey as a creative, conceptual and contemplative strategy for the production of photography. / The resulting images have been used to create photo-sequences and a short video piece that will form the basis of a future publication (published Winter 2015 - Spring 2016) exploring the creation of visual narrative through juxtaposition, sequence, design and materials. / 'Nine Walks' was presented at ‘Where Next - Steps Towards the Future of Walking Arts’ An International Symposium held at Falmouth University in April 2015.
