Abstract
This collection of wearable artefacts contributes to an enquiry where object and body are used as a device to engage audiences in a commentary about material value, product consumption and global concerns related to materials supply, recycling and sustainability. As both critical artefact and decorative adornment they aim to better understand product ownership, replacement and disposal practices in order to understand how changes in consumer behaviour might be encouraged. Inspired by the everyday belongings we often discard without thought the wearable jewels 'Reuse-Revalue' combine reclaimed materials, found objects with precious metals and gems, drawing upon traditional notions of the beaded necklace that exploit sound and tactility when worn. They question perceptions of material value and adornment, explore personal identity and create visual narratives.
