Abstract

‘Looking for Hyperborea’ is a research project through which Chloe Brown is exploring the mythical place of Hyperborea and it is the findings of this exploration that were presented at the conference 'Sensuous Knowledge: Ta(l)king Place' in Bergen, Norway, 23-25th January 2013 organised by Art Museums of Bergen and Bergen Academy of Art and Design. The research considers notions of ‘Northerness’, specifically that found in the most Northern parts of Norway above the Arctic Circle and revolves around Hyperborea, a place in Greek myth behind the north wind, beyond the cold and dark, a paradise where the sun never sets. Brown has used the staging of performative events and filmmaking as a methodology to critically explore this area of research. She has made two films in relation to this area of research and delivered a paper at the peer-reviewed international conference Sensuous Knowledge The films: 'The Hyperborean' (2009, duration 7:42 HD) and 'To Hyperborea' (2012, duration 7:33 HD). Through these films Brown questions the following things: an imagined place a place that could be impossible a place that is a metaphor a place yet to be discovered the unknown
