The SMART (sensor modular architecture for recording and telemetry) project defines a modular, hierarchical sensor architecture to allow rapid development of measurement systems for sports application. The SMART sensor concept is an open standard to allow integration of sensors and applications from different vendors. SMART sensors allow rapid development of new applications and enable the user to focus on the sporting application, not the implementation of the measurement system. The paper discusses the design concept and includes an example of an actual SMART sensor.
