Abstract

This chapter critically evaluates and discusses the practice of pilgrimage, which has been observed across various cultures and religions for centuries. The Hajj, an essential pillar of Islam, is not only a religious obligation but a potent force for fostering unity. It underscores the equality of all before Allah, transcending social status, wealth and pride. This chapter places its focus on religious pilgrims and their quest for identity and personal transformation before, during and after these profound journeys. The chapter also investigates the concept of pilgrimage as a means of seeking identity and transformation, using the Hajj as a case study to contextualize these ideas. Success in the Hajj journey extends beyond the completion of rituals; it resides in the profound transformations occurring within individuals and their redefned outlook on life. This transformation results in a deepened understanding of one's faith, conduct, and role within the family, community and society at large. The chapter ventures into the heart of the Hajj experience, unveiling the profound journey towards identity and true transformation that unfolds within the souls of pilgrims.
