Abstract

This chapter focuses on economic abuse that has recently drawn the attention of policy makers, scholars and domestic violence practitioners across the world. Economic abuse is understood as a unique form of abuse that involves controlling a person's ability to acquire, use and maintain economic and financial resources to create dependency (Adams et al. 2008). Drawing on academic literature and reports, it examines short-term and long-term impacts of economic abuse on survivors including children. It also explores various individual and institutions level barriers in responding to economic abuse and finally reflects on policy and practice to identify economic abuse and support survivors.
