Abstract

On Monday the 19th of September 2022, the day of the State funeral of Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II, Westminster was surrounded by a twelve foot high green steel wall denying access to the thousands of people who travelled to central London to line the route of the funeral cortege. Visitors were shepherded by members of the police and a multitude of independent event supervisors, through the back streets of St. James and Belgravia to Park Lane where they were encouraged to enter Hyde Park and view the funeral proceedings on giant video screens surrounded by fast food and refreshment stalls. Carried by mourners, tied to rucksacks, worn as hats and displayed alongside flowers and cards in makeshift memorials, the red, white and blue of the Union Flag was omnipresent. These photographs mark the route taken by thousands through central London capturing vernacular displays of the national flag encountered enroute. Produced as a limited edition 56 page digitally printed B5 book.
