Abstract

An electromagnetic system capable of steering the cathode spot of a vacuum arc has been implemented. The radius of the arc track and the confinement of the spot to the track are controllable by suitable choice of coil currents. Measurements have been made which show the effect of the applied field on the spot confinement and the results have been used to test the predictions of a new model of arc motion.
