Abstract

The presentation discussed two boat-communities and their struggle for right of access to the River Thames in central London - and the negotiations and re-development of water spaces in the context of huge economic interests and living history of the Thames, including the social and cultural importance of families that have navigated this river for generations. The presentation ended with Foghorn Requiem, a performance on the North Sea in 2013, which brought together maritime communities between Newcastle and Sunderland in a unique celebration of their shared history and culture connected to the sea.
