Abstract

A scanning electron microscope (SEM) has been used to examine plastic replicas taken from the surface of fatigue specimens in order to understand the role of microstructure on the early stages of fatigue crack development under various environmental conditions. This involved shadowing and coating replicas and pre-marking appropriate areas of interest prior to SEM examination.
