Abstract: | The Hyperborean (2009, duration 7:42 HD) was included in the group exhibition 'Cross-Cutting' at Sierra Metro Gallery, Edinburgh, 2009 Cross-cutting comprises films from The Sheffield Pavilion, new video work by Edinburgh-based artist Ewan Sinclair, a site-specific installation by Dundee-based artist Euan Taylor (Inefficient Solutions) and new video and photographic work by London-based collaboration Corinne Mynatt & Angus H Braithwaite. ‘Cross-cutting’ is the film editing technique of alternating, interweaving, or interspersing one narrative action with another, often used to dramatically build tension or to compare two different scenes. Bringing together time-based work from across the UK, the exhibition was conceived in response to a recent concentration in Edinburgh on Scottish film and video art. Launched at the 11th Istanbul Biennale, The Sheffield Pavilion presents specially commissioned and existing video works by eleven Sheffield-based artists. The construct of the ‘pavilion’ – a temporary structure used for leisure, entertainment or exhibition – provides a framework for the project and the artists’ contributions. 'The Hyperborean' was first shown at the 11th Istanbul Biennial in 2009 as part of the Sheffield Pavilion. |
