Over The Bones

WRIGHT, Ron (2010). Over The Bones. [Show/Exhibition]
Creators:WRIGHT, Ron
Abstract:Over The Bones, a 30 minute 16mm documentary directed by Charlotte Ginsborg was nominated for theTiger Shorts Commission at the Rotterdam Film festival 2010 My role was sound designer as on her previous film “The Mirroring Cure” which was exhibited/ screened in over 15 diifferent countries. The film interweaves the lives of two intentionally contrary individuals - a Scottish truck driver and a Nigerian improvisational singer. Witnessed in their separate working environments, their stories slowly converge until they meet through an accident at a swimming pool that has startling consequences for both characters. The narrative juxtaposes real personal details of the characters with fictional elements which disrupt the conventions of a documentary framework. Through the juxtaposition of different types of performance the film investigates how men and women use different emotional languages to communicate with others, express anxiety and find their place in the world. Ultimately asking the question, “Whose voice do we speak with, whom do we feel able to speak to and who hears our voice?”. As sound designer, my approach to OTB was to utilise the following enquires prominent in own main research: • How sound can be used to describe notions of the individual and environment through a sonic interpretation of “Psychogeography” or the study of specific effects of the geographical environment, consciously organised or not, on the emotions and behaviour of individuals" • How sound can be used to explore this concept further, creating an inverse theory where the individual in moments of extreme isolated anxiety constructs an alternative reality. • To examine the role and function of cinsesonics to address problems in constructing and seamlessly juxtaposing real and imagined situations. Working closely with the director, the strategy was to subtly subvert the veracity of the documentary format by manipulating and synthesising elements of the female characters voice to create an internal voice for the driver Thus describing both 2 different identities in public and private space.
