Abstract

The paper describes a new short-term hot-work tool-wear test in which effective simulation has been achieved by intermittent, high temperature plastic deformation of a workpiece material against the revolving surface of a tool specimen under moderate loading conditions. The primary variables affecting the hot-work tool-wear process can all be independently selected to suit the specific requirements of a test program, and the tool matrix can be assessed against a wide variety of workpiece materials. The test can be used for ranking materials and also for wear surface and tool-workpiece compatibility studies.
