Abstract

The article examines measures intended to introduce fairer criminal procedure and trial process in Japan following deep concerns expressed about Japan's criminal justice system by the United Nations Human Rights Committee in 1998. A number of these matters were examined in an earlier article in 1995 in Justice of the Peace "The Dark Cloud over Japanese Criminal Justice : Abuse of Suspects and Forced Confessions" ( Andrew Watson (1995) 159 JPN pp.516-9 and 534-7.
