Abstract

This chapter explores themes including: learning through play, interaction, knowledge and skills, and differentiation. It considers well-used teaching strategies in each of these areas, but also emphasise innovative approaches that may provide alternative models. There is a particular focus on opportunities generated through ‘playful’ pedagogical approaches. Expanded examples of ‘playful pedagogies’ illustrate learning through play at different ages, e.g., role play in the early years, extended role-play in upper key stage 1/lower key stage 2, and play in a virtual environment in upper key stage 2. Key approaches to differentiation are outlined but there will be an emphasis on research evidence related to children’s cultural resources and how children are enabled to ‘take up’ these resources in educational contexts.
