Material Memory – the post industrial landscape as site for creative practice.

An exhibition to accompany and further explore issues raised in the conference 'Material Memory – the Post Industrial Landscape as Site for Creative Practice' held at Newcastle University on 14th November 2014.

The film 'Dancing in the Boardroom (Turnin' My Heartbeat Up)' by Chloë Brown was exhibited.

Both the exhibition and conference have their roots in ‘Topographies of the Obsolete’, a significant R&D collaborative project initiated by Bergen Academy of Art that both deepens and develops understanding of the post-industrial landscape with reference to the industrial ruin. Via a series of workshops and with the broad based participation of cross-disciplinary artists/educators from a range of international institutions, the socio-economic histories, industrial architecture, and production remnants of the former historic Spode site at Stoke-on-Trent were explored.

‘Material Memory’ - both the exhibition and the conference - brought together artists, curators, landscape architects, musicians and cultural geographers to present live projects and debate the issues that such work raises.
